Correcting the record. And talking more about books.

Apparently the supposed "BBC" books list is nothing of the sort, (though it may be based on a real list, or just coincidentally overlap with it a lot.) The list going around comes from Facebook (of course it does) and is probably prefaced with the "only six" thing just to make people outraged and so repost it. I didn't find it outrageous exactly, but I guess I perpetuated the meme anyway, so it worked. But plenty of people are not big readers, so the average person not having read a bunch isn't that wild, once I recalled that not everybody took AP lit. All the people reposting it are, of course readers, especially on my DW, so of course they've all read more. Now I wonder what the real average number of books is, but you'd have to get a lot of non-readers interested in the thing to find out, so that's unlikely.

The actual BBC reading list contains the following books that are not on the erroneous list:

Artemis Fowl, Eoin Colfer
Black Beauty, Anna Sewell - Yay! I mean, it's all nostalgia, I've no idea if I'd even find it readable now that I'm not a horse-mad child, but I love, love, loved this as a kid. I'd re-read it multiple times before I turned twelve.
Double Act, Jacqueline Wilson
Girls in Love, Jacqueline Wilson
Good Omens, Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman - Hey, it's my current obsession! Nice.
Goodnight Mister Tom, Michelle Magorian
Gormenghast, Mervyn Peake
Guards! Guards!, Terry Pratchett
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, JK Rowling
- The proper list apparently doesn't fold series in together, but lists individual books.
Philosopher's Stone
Prisoner of Azkaban
Holes, Louis Sachar

I capture the Castle, Dodie Smith
Kane and Abel, Jeffrey Archer
Katherine, Anya Seton
Magician, Raymond E Feist - I keep being surprised to see these things pop up. People talk all the time about other "big" fantasy series, I've heard everything from LoTR to the Drizzt books referenced in casual conversation in nerdy spaces, but never these, and yet apparently lots and lots of people read them. I wonder why they're not more talked about?
Matilda, Roald Dahl
Mort, Terry Pratchett
Night Watch, Terry Pratchett
- Lots of Pratchett on the proper list, I see!
Noughts and Crosses, Malorie Blackman
Perfume, Patrick Süskind
The Alchemist, Paulo Coelho
The BFG, Roald Dahl
The Clan of the Cave Bear, Jean M Auel
- I check this one off, but I did not enjoy it and also barely recall it. The only thing from it that really sticks in my mind is that it had a major rape plot, I had to go google and go "Oh right, it's that one that was also weirdly speciesist about Cro-Magnons and Neanderthals." The main character's entire personality is pretty much "I am Cro-Magnon so I'm different and also better and also tragically alone" and while that's not *racist*, because they could well be different, being different species, it's
The Color of Magic, Terry Pratchett
The God of Small Things, Arundhati Roy
The Godfather, Mario Puzo
The Magus, John Fowles
The Pillars of the Earth, Ken Follett
The Princess Diaries, Meg Cabot
The Shell Seekers, Rosamunde Pilcher
The Stand, Stephen King
The Story of Tracy Beaker, Jacqueline Wilson
The Thorn Birds, Colleen McCollough
The Twits, Roald Dahl
Treasure Island, Robert Louis Stevenson

Vicky Angel, Jacqueline Wilson

Insert Twilight "yes, yes, yes!" gif here.

Finally, my first dead tree edition! The Sacrifice, my gay vampire adventure/romance is now formally scheduled to come out in paperback on September 29th!

If you want a signed copy, please contact me asap, as I'll be placing my own order for author's copies in the next day or two. You can just drop me a comment here or e-mail me at

They'll be $13.00 direct from JMS, and I should be able to make that price happen for the signed ones from me too. :3 I'm willing to take pre-orders on that basis if you want to float $13 to me via paypal, and I'll give you a choice of a refund or an extra buck or two if it doesn't work out as I hope.

I'll have a purchase link to buy unsigned ones as soon as they're actually up on the JMS site. They'll also eventually be for sale on Amazon too, but I don't have a date for the Amazon release yet. Sometime the following month.
